Luumi Unplastic Bowl Review
Are you looking for more ways to reduce the plastic in your home? Tired of bringing home plastic food storage items because the choices at your local stores are so limited? Me too! So when Eartheasy.com offered me the opportunity to try one of their newest products, the Luumi Unplastic Bowl – a plastic free reusable bag, I couldn’t wait for it to arrive!
EarthEasy.com is one of my favorite online stores for eco-friendly items and not only did the product arrive quickly, but it also came in a standard kraft shipping box without any unnecessary packaging.
Just plain kraft shipping box, a packing slip, and the Luumi Unplastic Bowl and its recyclable attached tag. That’s all.

A Plastic Free Reusable Bowl and Bag in One
This bowl is not like any bowl I’ve tried or used in the past. It is made from 100% pure platinum silicone and it claims that you can cook with it, eat from it, and use it for food storage.
The UnPlastic bowl is different in other ways too. It is 8.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide, comes with a metal clip, and although it stands on its own, it is soft-sided. This means it can be folded easily to close in a variety of ways depending on how you choose to use it. It looks more like a tall silicone bag than a bowl, but when folded down, it can be used to eat from it like a bowl.
Top Features of the Luumi UnPlastic Bowl
- Freezer, dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe to 350 degrees
- Easy to clean and sanitize (folds completely inside out)
- Stands up on its own for easy filling and use
- With the included metal clip, it is watertight and leakproof
- Can also close it with the formed silicone buttons for dry contents
- 100% plastic-free and made from 100% silicone (including its packaging)
- Endlessly reusable, with proper care
Uses for the Luumi UnPlastic Bowl
This product has so many uses including…
- Store and/or Travel with Foods
Store dry foods in the pantry or pack your lunch with it. The Luumi Silicone Bags and Sealed Lids are also great for storing and packing foods.
- Freezing Foods
Great for freezing small portions.
- Take-Home Container for Restaurant Leftovers – Doggie Bag
I’d keep it in a paper or cloth bag inside my purse if I were going to use it as a doggie bag since silicone seems to pick up lint and particles easily.
- Ice Pack
Add ice cubes and fold over with or without the clip to avoid leaking
- Sick Bag
I think it would be effective but I’m not sure I’d want to use it for anything else. (Although you can sanitize it by boiling.)
- Travel Treat Bag for Kids
With or without the clip it is perfect for carrying a snack when traveling or for after practice.
- Portable Dog Food or Water Bowl
If you like to hike, take long walks, or travel with your dog this bowl is perfect to pack, carry, and feed/water on the go.
These are just a few of the ways this plastic free reusable product can be used, but I expect I’ll find more after using it for a while.
My Less Favorite Things about the UnPlastic Bowl
This product has so many good uses, but there are a few things that you need to know before buying this bowl and other silicone products…
- New Silicone Products Can Attract Lint
Silicone products are food safe but they have a tendency to pick up lint and other small particles, especially when they are new. After awhile the ‘tacky’ texture of the silicone is reduced and wipes away more easily. It’s a minor thing, but off-putting if you’re carrying food in a fabric bag. (Or your kids like to drop them on the car floor, like mine.)
- The Clip is Not Attached to the Bowl
Again, not a big deal, but since the watertight clip isn’t attached, it can be misplaced. (Think bowl with a lid. They always seem to get separated.)
- Silicone Products are Difficult to Recycle
Most curbside or local drop off recycling facilities won’t accept silicone, although it is technically recyclable through silicone recyclers including Terracycle. The good news is that with proper care, silicone products are very durable and last a very long time before they are worn out.

What’s the Bottom Line? Would You Use It Again?
Yes, I plan on buying more Luumi brand plastic free reusable products, especially now that prices are coming down. You can often find them on sale at EarthEasy.com and Amazon.com. Plus, they come in a variety of fun colors!
